Seen from the Rotondo hut the Witenwasserenstock is an amorphous lump of no distinction. Its eastern side-profile as seen from its fore-summit is another matter entirely. Throwing a sheer wall of a thousand feet down to the Gerengletscher, it would not look out of place in the Karakoram, Pakistan. Being east-facing, this profile begged to be photographed at sunrise, which called for another 4 o`clock rise to reach it in time for the event. Unfortunately I had only a 28mm lens with me. This crops to a narrower 42mm on my camera`s sensor. As a result both the bottom 100 metres of the face and the glacier at its foot are missing from the picture. It doesn`t alway pay to "go light". |
