A July 2008 ascent of the Zinalrothorn with Colin Cameron went well, except that I was so much on the limit of my ability that my rather finnicky medium-format rangefinder camera never made it out of the rucksack. As Reinhold Messner once said, photography is not on the agenda when you`re having a real adventure. Still buzzing about the climb but disappointed by the lack of celluloid evidence thereof, I went back two weekends later, this time as a backpacking photographer. The aim was to get as high up the south-east ridge of the Unter Gabelhorn as possible. From there the most dramatic side of the Zinalrothorn would hopefully be framed in glorious sunrise light. I left my tent at Höhbalmen early enough, but got into a tangle of pinnacles along the ridge - with no unrestricted sight of the object of my desire. My disappointment was mitigated however by the view in the opposite direction - towards the mountain that any sane photographer would have prioritised in the first place anyway. The colourful and shapely rocks of the foreground ridge give three, perhaps unique, compositions of the mountain in question (line 1).
