The mountain that dominates this page needs no introduction of course. The images on lines 1 to 4 were taken on a snatched weekend of good weather, after three or so weeks of clag and rain in which the Matterhorn had hidden its face from the many thousands of no doubt disappointed tourists who had come from afar to see it.
Also in town that weekend in June 2007 were 400 members of The Alpine Club, there to celebrate the club`s 150th Anniversary.
All were pleasantly flattered by the effort the Swiss also made to commemorate the major contribution of British alpinists to the early climbing history of their country.
A longstanding school friend, David Healey, oversees The English Church in Zermatt and had invited me to the special service held there on the Sunday at the behest of The Alpine Club. In this age of declining church attendance, it was heartening to hear the members giving their vocal chords some welly during the hymns. And clearly these were not men dragged reluctantly to a church service by their wives.
For those of you who remember the one scruffily dressed man in the church, front row left, please forgive my inappropriate dress.
I had camped the night before up by the Riffelsee. I hope these images go by way of redress.
