My visit to the odd little tax haven Samnaun bore out a principle that has held unwaveringly true during my attempt to beef out these alpine pages with worthwhile photographs. Namely that, as often as not, you will go out in search of one thing, not find it, but instead come back with something else as worthy replacement. The "rote Seeli" had caught my eye in pictures on the Web. It is a tiny lake at 2700 metres on the north shoulder of the Muttler. For two or three weeks a year when the surrounding snows melt, its waters turn a vivid red due to algae growth. June is normally a good bet to drop by and observe this spectacle, but in 2005 it wasn`t. We were way too late. The pool had practically dried out after a, rain-wise, lean spring. But spotted from the cable-car leading up to the Flimjoch was this worthy stand-in. Such strong reds and greens make uncommon partners in landscape photographs. I hope you like these. |
