| Commencing row four, there are eight pictures here of my friend Norman Croucher. Norman is very well-known in British climbing circles because he is a double-amputee, having lost both his lower legs beneath the knee-joint. They were spliced off by a train in 1959 as he lay across a railway line having, in his words, "chosen the wrong place to fall asleep drunk". Free from bitterness (it was entirely his own fault of course) Norman went about compensating for this loss with an extraordinary climbing career spanning several decades, culminating in his greatest achievement in 1995 when he reached the summit of Cho Oyu, 8,201 metres, the sixth highest mountain in the world. Wanting to support me in own recovery from a severe road accident, Norman found himself on two easy hills in the Bernina Alps - Piz Murtel and Munt Pers. No epics here. In fact the only life-threatening decision we had to make on this trip was whether or not to bring a second bottle of champagne to celebrate his 65th birthday on the summit of Piz Murtel. |
