When a high pressure system settles for a long period over the Alps, it ain`t necessarily good news for landscape photographers. Day one after a clearing storm usually produces good visibility and nice crisp horizons, but soon after, a milky vapour appears and begins to scupper any hopes of dramatic light. This is especially noticeable in the valleys on the south side of the Alps where the weather is often better than in the north. Being predominantly "Alpen Südseite", the lower valleys of the Ortler have more than their fair share of haze. So does the Tessin. One advantage here though is that several roads climb to an altitude that is well above the atmospheric soup. One such road leads to the Passo Mortirollo between Mazzo and Mono in the south-west corner of the group. With the exception of the two panoramas, all the images below were taken in that small corner of the Ortler. We accidently discovered it through our desire to escape the haze that lay all around us in Val di Corteno. |
