To put it metaphorically the mighty Niagara Falls are the FC Barcelona of waterfalldom, playing at home in front of a sold-out stadium. By comparison the other waterfalls here are a bunch of Sunday morning hackers still nursing hangovers from the night before (exaggeration for effect). But I enjoyed photographing the latter much more, scrambling down steep slippery banks to get the best photo angle, risking life and limb, simply because (to plagiarize George Mallory) "they are there". They are also beautiful, as water obeying the law of gravity often is. Thanks go to George Fischer and Mark Harris for writing "Waterfalls of Ontario" which was our one and only guidebook during a wet and unseasonably cold Autumn 2009 trip to Ontario and New York State`s Adirondacks. |
