One of the greatest wildlife experiences in North America is offered in a forgotten corner of it. Or so it appeared to us as we drove into Hyder, Alaska and immediately hit a pot-hole in the dirt road and banged our heads on the car ceiling. But a raised and fenced board-walk has been built above Fish Creek, a tributary of the Salmon River, and from this protected position bears can be observed fishing for salmon (mid-July to early September). So close were we to the action that my 180mm lens (hardly a long tele) was often too long to fit in the entire animal
In my opinion this area is one of the great "Geheimtips" of northern North America, particularly as the approach through British Columbia is also very scenic. We had characteristically bad weather here, but it has its own special atmosphere that a place blessed with perpetual blue skies could never match.
