One of the greatest wildlife experiences in North America is offered in a forgotten corner of it. Or so it appeared to us as we drove into Hyder, Alaska and immediately hit a pot-hole in the dirt road and banged our heads on the car ceiling. But a raised and fenced board-walk has been built above Fish Creek, a tributary of the Salmon River, and from this protected position bears can be observed fishing for salmon (mid-July to early September). So close were we to the action that my 180mm lens (hardly a long tele) was often too long to fit in the entire animal |
