Bless him, he meant well. We met Doug from Sandspit on the ferry from Skidegate. He took us back to his home, and plied us with hospitality, for no other apparent reason than the desire to please. He even put expensive crab meat on the beach in order to attract bald eagles so I could (attempt to) photograph one. I blew it by turning my back to the bait at exactly the wrong time! After we told him we were going to Gray Bay to camp, Doug recommended two very private camp spots that few knew about and drew a map to help us find them. And find them we did. But, to put it delicately, they were in a less than useable state, indicating that he hadn`t been there for some time - we first thought "for about twenty years". But then we remembered that the Queen Charlotte Islands are distinctly moist for much of the year and, to be fair, it would surely not have taken long for the tables to deteriorate to this extent without maintenance.
