Stories abound of climbers attempting big things in Patagonia and being confined to their tents for days, weeks even, pinned down by the fierce weather so typical there. But at least at the end of the failed expedition, they have the option to go home. Imagine, by contrast, the plight of inmates in high-security D Block, Alcatraz. Kept in their cells, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with nothing to do, no reading matter to pass the time, and only allowed out of their cells once a week for a ten-minute shower. Can you imagine the feeling - towelling down at the end of that shower - knowing it will be another 6 days 23 hours and 50 minutes before you can enjoy the same respite from confinement again?
