Bodie Ghost Town and The Bristlecone Pine Forest have two things in common. They both lie high up on a parallel mountain chain to the Sierra Nevada, offering a spectacular vista to the west. They both also contain a great deal of dead wood. In the latter case however, the dead surface of the trees hides an interior that has been alive for thousands of years in some cases. These are the oldest known living things on Earth. Even if you are not into superlatives, the biggest this, the oldest that, these trees will captivate you with their gnarled and lavishly complex beauty. This is a forest like almost no other. Every tree has its own individual character, which is what makes walking amongst Schulman and Patriarch Groves, slightly breathlessly at 10,500 feet, such a delight. |
