Antelope Canyon, whicht cuts through the red Navajo sandstone rock south of the western end of Lake Powell near Page, is the most beautiful and photogenic of the slot canyons in the southwest. There are straightforward reasons for this: it is very narrow, particularly at the entrance, but is not too deep to prevent the sun from illuminating its passageways. The rocks have bright red to orange colours with pretty textures and patterns, and the movement of light and shadows during the day produce enchanting, ever-changing conditions.

Extravagant movements of light also occur at powwows. The photos on this page are from an indoor competition in a sports hall in Tuba City, east of the Grand Canyon. This was a special event for us because we were the only whites in the entire building - on the one hand a disturbing indication of the racial separation still evident in 2001. But we were very moved (actually shyly embarassed too) to be singled out for a warm welcome by the master of ceremonies, "our special guests, all the way from Switzerland".
