My wife is a virtuous Catholic woman and does not deserve to be dumped by anyone, let alone by an Englishman for whom she had gone to great bureaucratic pains to import into the somewhat insular Central European island of Switzerland. But my first two years in that foreign culture, with its spoken language markedly different from its written one, were too much for me to handle. It seemed I had bitten off more than I could chew. Working in a McDonalds kitchen in St Gallen didn`t help either - a Chartered Surveyor donning the famous red and white striped shirt at the age of 37. Most such men are paying off £100,000 mortgages at that age, whereas I was restarting my life from the bottom upwards. During my flight from my marriage and from Switzerland I headed for the remotest part of the British Isles I could think of - the Western Scottish Highlands north of Fort Willliam. Nights in Corryhully Bothy and Glen Affric "Youth Hostel" must have restored my balance of mind, because I was back on a Cross-Channel ferry a month later.
